Zimbabwean Artist to kick-off Ashiko Festival!
The Orillia annual "Drummers Drumming Away Hunger Festival" will include Fine Arts Professor Chikonzero (Chiko) Chazunguza of Zimbabwe, Southern Africa. Chiko's participation has been made possible through our continuing partnership with Coalition of New Canadians for Arts & Culture (CNCAC) and funding through the provincial Ministry of Culture.
Chiko will kick-off this year's festival on Saturday, September 11 at 7pm at the Orillia Youth Centre. The evening events will include a workshop in the visual arts and drumming.
Please come out with family and friends and help us in welcoming Chiko and the other festvial performers.
Ashiko! Drumming Away Hunger Festival is an annual celebration of culturally diverse through drumming, the procedes from the day are donated to Sharing Place Orillia, the local food bank.
This year, the drumming workshops will be on Sunday, September 12 from 10am to dusk. For further information please see Sharing Place Oriilia.
Chiko will also be our first guest mentor in our new classroom/office located in Penetanguishene Secondary School. If you are in the Pentanguishene region, you will have an opportunity to see his work at an evening concert and workshop at 7:30 pm in this office.
